KalFos - we help you grow
KalFos is a unique, spreadable renewable fertiliser that is rich in key nutrients. It contains high amounts of calcium and phosphate, which help improve soil fertility and plant nutrient levels, making it an effective replacement to expensive, manufactured fertilisers.
High acid rainfall and the demands of agricultural farming have led to nutrient depletion and lower soil pH values. This leads to a lower uptake of essential minerals and trace elements, which can result in a lower yield from crop and livestock. The application of KalFos on farmland increases soil pH values and nutrient uptake. This stimulates plant growth which improves crop and grass yield.
We take product safety and efficacy very seriously, in a world where the misuse of fertilisers and Animal By-Product can have far-reaching consequences. KalFos has been fully assessed by the Environment Agency’s End of Waste panel, and was awarded End of Waste status in 2014. This assessment included aspects of it’s safe use as a fertilising agent and soil improver, as well as placing tight controls on the feedstocks we can use to produce it and the method of production we have to adhere to. Our feedstocks come from our clients, who are farmers, abattoirs and food processors, and KalFos is then ultimately used to grow crops and grass which feed animals, completing a closed-loop production system.
KalFos is produced by rendering and incinerating Animal By-Products, under an approval from DEFRA and a permit from the Environment Agency. The system used ensures no plant, animal or human pathogens are carried over from the feedstock to the end product, all are fully treated and no protein matter is left in the end KalFos product. Following the strict rules and regulations that govern the production process means KalFos can be utilised as a fertiliser without requiring Environment Agency land spreading permits and deployments, or observing grazing/harvesting intervals found in Animal By-Product Regulations.
As KalFos has been assessed by the EA and DEFRA and is no longer a waste or an Animal By-Product, it can be utilised on land covered by various farm assurance schemes, including The Red Tractor Scheme.

As a by-product of a biomass to energy plant, Kalfos can be considered to have no net Carbon contribution. By comparison, other manufactured fertilisers such as TSP have a positive Carbon contribution, meaning their production results in Carbon being emitted into the atmosphere. Hence, by choosing Kalfos, you are supporting agricultures net zero Carbon target and preventing up to 161kg CO2/T of Kalfos spread.
We support our sister company, ReFood’s initiative: Vision 2020. Almost 15 million tonnes of food goes to waste every year in the UK. 40% of this ends up in landfill. It is expected that landfill space in the UK will be full by 2020. This is just unacceptable. Vision 2020 aims to change government legislation to make it illegal for food waste to end up in landfills. Food waste is fully recyclable and this initiative aims to make sure that it is.
KalFos extends our parent company Saria’s Vision 2020 ethos. KalFos is made from abattoir and farm waste, dealing with materials that require a high level of safe disposal. The feedstock would otherwise be incinerated and landfilled, but is now utilised as part of the closed loop system, being returned to agricultural land to grow crops and grass that feed the next generation of livestock. In addition to making a valuable fertiliser, the manufacture of KalFos also produces enough renewable electricity to power up to 4,000 homes a year.
